Configuring Hierarchies

Learn how to add a node, delete node and upload hierarchy file.

Hierarchies are the basis for user and device organization. VHQ hierarchies allow a high degree of flexibility and granularity in organizing devices with up to fifteen levels of specificity. You can administer devices by hierarchy.

Go to Administration > Estate Administration > Hierarchies to view the Hierarchy Establishment screen.

EXAMPLE:
Hierarchies can be established based on the Company, Region, State, Store, Lane, etc.

Managing Hierarchy Levels

You must add levels and hierarchy to administer the devices.

To manage hierarchy levels:

  1. Go to Administration > Estate Administration > Hierarchies.
  2. Click Manage Hierarchy Levels. You can add, modify or delete the hierarchy levels.

NOTE:
When you delete a node, the corresponding child nodes will be deleted automatically. The user can modify the root node, but cannot delete it. By default, the hierarchy is added to the level.

  1. You can drill down further by clicking the hierarchy node. Each node in the hierarchy has the following attributes. You can view the Hierarchy Value Properties of the node selected in Hierarchy Values.

IP starting address

Indicates the starting IP address to identify device in a network. You can enter the value.

Location identifier

Identifies the location of the device. The device needs to be associated to be identified with the location.

Adding New Node

You can add a new node in the hierarchy.

To add new mode:

  1. Click Add nodeto add a new node in the VHQ hierarchy. You must select the parent node under which you want to create the new node.

Deleting a Node

You can delete a node in the hierarchy.

To delete a node:

  1. ClickDelete nodeto delete a node in the VHQ hierarchy using the VHQ GUI.

NOTE:
You first need to move (or delete) all devices that are located under this node (or its descendent nodes) in the hierarchy to some other part of the VHQ hierarchy. All child hierarchies under the deleted hierarchy will also be deleted.

  1. Select the hierarchy and click Delete node to delete a node.

WARNING:
Please be aware that users cannot delete Device assigned Hierarchy. A message, “Delete not completed. This hierarchy either has devices assigned to it or has child Hierarchy and therefore cannot be deleted.” is displayed.

Uploading Hierarchy File

You can upload a hierarchy file. The Hierarchy Upload allows users to make bulk changes to the hierarchy. This feature is particularly useful where bulk updates are required and it is difficult to make these changes manually. The hierarchy upload file feature allows a user to select and upload a hierarchy upload file, in a .csv file format.

IMPORTANT:
Before you import a .CSV or.XML file that contains VHQ hierarchy information, you must create the required number of levels in the VHQ Hierarchy. For more information, see Manage Hierarchy Levels.

To upload a hierarchy file:

  1. Go to Administration > Estate Administration > Hierarchies.
    2. Click Upload Hierarchy File.
    3. ClickBrowseto browse for the file.
    4. Click Import.
You can download the file from Device Management > Import/Export tab.
